New York Yankees: Is There Really One Man To Blame?

New York Yankees Brian Cashman

One thing is for sure for the 2023 MLB season. This isn’t the same New York Yankees team you grew up on, or is it? No matter what level of success they may have had throughout the course of history, as of late coming up short is their new favorite trend. Teams typically go through rough patches in sports but this one is exceptionally painful for the Yankees faithful.

Just how bad are the New York Yankees as of late? Well from 2010-2020 is the first decade we’ve seen without a championship since the 80s. Furthermore, it’s only the second time they’ve been so unaccomplished since the 1920s. Fans have been pretty spoiled with wins while some teams haven’t appeared in a World Series let alone won one and the Bronx Bombers have done so 27 times.

Their last championship was in 2009. Before that, it was in 2000 when they completed a three-peat. The finger point is going all around and fans have even been heard chanting “Fire Cashman” after the 2023 season seems to have hit a new low. Far too many times the Yankees are getting swept or losing games in embarrassing fashion.

What’s odd about it is. In his tenure, the New York Yankees have won 4 World Series. The only problem with that is, he won three straight upon taking over for NY then the one in 2009. which means in the past 23 seasons, the Yanks have got them done with Brian Cashman at the helm just one time.

As fans, it’s hard to see a team move on from a legend. As a franchise, it’s hard to walk away from a person who has been a staple with the organization for years. Yet, at this point, we have to ask ourselves, was it Brian Cashman’s flashy moves that made the Yankees contenders or was it George Steinbrenner with an empty checkbook that made them exciting even without championships?

Of course, Brian Cashman has an eye for talent. We’ve seen some of the biggest names develop for the Yankees over the years, but what is he doing to put together a winning team? The blank checks didn’t get it done. Downgrading and trying to rebuild the farm system isn’t getting it done. Nothing the New York Yankees are doing seems to be getting back to the level of play they had before closing the old Yankee Stadium in favor of the new one. When it opened in 2009, it was the only year they won a World Series. Is the magic really gone? Is it time for Brian Cashman to move on? How do the New York Yankees get back to winning?
