Why The Washington Redskins Should Go After Philip Rivers

Washington Redskins pot

The Washington Redskins were hoping that they could regain the magic they had in 2018 before they were hit with the injury bug. However, this is a professional league where memories are left in the past and players play for the present. The Redskins had to deal with more injuries in 2019 but it was their shaky play at QB that really set the team up for failure.

Heading into the 2020 offseason, there are many holes the Skins must fill before they can claim to be threats to the Dallas Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC East. With an aging running back, a QB still shaky after his rookie season, and a new head coach, the Redskins have their work cut out for them.

The Washington Redskins have not said it publicly but there is a slight chance they may want to move on from Dwayne Haskins. Granted, it was just his rookie season and those are often the hardest. But how much time are they willing to give him? Here is an idea new coach Ron Rivera may want to explore.

With Philip Rivers now a free agent, the Redskins should make a move there. The reason for that is, the Redskins were not as bad as their record indicates. If they can get a veteran signal-caller in the huddle, they could contend for the NFC East. What this will allow is for Haskins to sit a year and learn from a future Hall of Famer.

And, at this stage in his career, Rivers won’t be out to break the bank. He still has some arm left after 16 years with the Los Angeles Chargers where he passed for 59,271 yards, 397 touchdowns while completing 64.7 percent of his passes. With rumors that teams like the Tennessee Titans, Dolphins, and even the Oakland Raiders could go after Tom Brady, why should the Redskins stand pat?

Rivers has enough left in him despite a season where it all fell apart to make the Skins contenders in a tight NFC East. By adding another receiver to help out Terry McLaurin, the NFL Draft can be used to find a capable running back. Rivers is not washed up. His price tag may be a little high but one season and $62M open, this could be a great decision.
