The Flash Has A Bigger Problem Than Low Box Office Numbers

The Flash Barry Allen

It is no surprise that DC’s newest superhero movie, The Flash, flopped. It was doomed from the start between the end of an era and the controversy surrounding the lead, Ezra Miller. The notion was on people’s minds long before the movie was released. Now that it has and the box office stinks, there are plenty of fingers to point. Too bad the problem wasn’t how bad the movie is. It wasn’t at all, but there’s an even bigger problem ahead.

The disappointment wasn’t with the movie itself. It wasn’t with the cast or crew. It wasn’t even the CGI. No, the real problem with The Flash is the plot but not in this movie. The problem is The Flash going forward. If we’re getting a new iteration of a bigger and better DCU, then what about the Flash going forward? We just got one of the best story arcs from the comics in Flashpoint or their version of it. So now we have the small screen iteration and a movie version. Are we really supposed to pretend that a third would fit in?

The Flash has some of the bigger stories in the DC comic universe so they don’t necessarily have to do another Flashpoint. They can do Crisis on Infinite Earths. The new DCU can pivot from Barry Allen completely and do a Born to Run story with a Year One for Wally West. If they want to continue the multiverse into their newest shared universe on the big screen their best bet would be Flash of Two Worlds. There is plenty of story for them to build off of so it won’t be that big of a deal.

Yet, fans will still miss out on a story they’ll more than likely never get the true version of. By now (mostly) everyone knows the Flashpoint story where Bruce Wayne is killed in the alley and not his parents. Thomas Wayne beats his murderer to death and Martha is so distraught she becomes the Joker in that universe. There’a whole story that goes far beyond that but imagine that movie. As a 1-up, imagine that movie where Margot Robbie plays Martha Wayne and we get her version of the Joker instead of Harley Quinn.

That’s the real disappointment in The Flash. Not only did it disappoint but it takes one of the best stories of all-time when it comes to The Flash and takes it off of the table. Maybe with a little creativity they can make it work, but it seems like all hope is lost for a truer live-action Flashpoint movie.
