New York Giants: Brian Daboll’s First Year Challenges

New York Giants HC Brian Daboll

There’s no easy way to say it, but Brian Daboll has has his work cut out for him. The New York Giants have a mound of issues to tackle and it’s highly unlikely they’ll all be addressed in the first season. The Giants are looking to get back to the top after year’s of struggles. What does the team need to address for Daboll to make the Giants successful?

The Salary Cap

According to Spotrac.com the New York Giants are currently sitting at ~$11 mil over the cap going into the offseason. In his first season, not only will Daboll need to find ways to work current playmakers into his systems, he’ll need to find guys on the free agent market to fill holes. The only way to do that is for the Giants to get creative with their cap figures, find veterans to bridge gaps until their cap space is back on track, and hit big on each of their draft picks. Defensively the Giants were a solid unit but to get back under the cap they might have to trade out some playmakers or cut bigger contracts. They might have to renegotiate current salaries to fit under cap but they’ll want to avoid completely gutting the team for a fresh start.

Find The Spark On Offense

Eli Manning was one of the better QBs for the Giants. He won a couple Super Bowls, struggled with the team through bad times, and kept the team from burning first round picks on QBs.  His replacement, Daniel Jones, hasn’t quite found that rhythm yet, but that’s not entirely his fault. The Giants haven’t had a healthy receiver unit even through the days of Eli Manning. An offense that can’t work the passing game with it’s top stars will always struggle. It forces them to shift to overworking Saquon Barkley which in turn makes their offense one dimensional. Daboll is said to be the spark that helped the Buffalo Bills offense find their groove, can he do the same for the New York Giants?

First thing he has to do is build the confidence in Daniel Jones. Jones and his teammates need to see immediate results to solidify their confidence in the new offense. They need to play fast, and they need to be able to put up points in bunches. The time for settling for field goals needs to be a thing of the past. Daboll needs to make the Giants offense calculated but explosive.

Change Fan Perspective

The New York Giants have had their share of success, but it hasn’t come as of late. They’ve had two winning seasons in the past 10 years and only one of those had a double digit win total. There’s a slim chance the Giants will be in the mix for the Super Bowl this year, but there’s still a chance nonetheless. The new regime needs the fans to see progress. They’ won’t settle for another 4-6 win season without some sort of dominance. On offense or defense, pick a side and dominate.

The 2022 New York Giants football season will be a challenge. The team has teetered on mediocrity for years. However, they have good players in house, they just need to be motivated and get healthy. Can Brian Daboll get them back on track?
