New England Patriots: Mac Jones Needs To Reel In His Ego

New England Patriots QB Mac Jones

It’s not often you see confirmation of dysfunction on the football field, especially out of the New England Patriots. Bill Belichick runs a tight ship and all matters are usually kept in-house. Even in press conferences, you only get tidbits of what Belichick wants to be released. Last year, however, we saw dysfunction on full display with quarterback Mac Jones seen showing his frustration with the Pats’ offense. If the team wants any success Mac Jones might need to dial his ego back a little. There’s a huge difference between being passionate about the game and overstepping.

First and foremost, the verbal back and forth between Mac Jones and Matt Patricia on the sideline last year should’ve never happened. What has Mac Jones done then fall into the lap of one of the most dominant franchises of the past two decades? He got the chance to play with a future Hall of Fame head coach who holds his staff in high regard. Matt Patricia might not be everyone’s favorite coach, nor do you have to like him as a person. However, if Bill Belichick brought him back in, he obviously knows enough to be trusted.

Matt Patricia has been a part of the New England Patriots’ Super Bowl efforts on multiple occasions. He’s not some high school football coach from some random middle-of-nowhere school Belichick owed a favor to. Throwing a tantrum on the sideline because of the run game made Jones look foolish. Oh, the run game sucks? That’s not exactly the leadership you want from your supposed franchise quarterback. Imagine being a running back busting his backside while the run game is failing and your guy inadvertently throws you under the bus while pointing fingers at the play caller. Maybe his RBs were frustrated too, but what if our quarterback played better and was a true threat to the defense so it opened up the run game?

Mac Jones is no Tom Brady. Last year, Jones was the third-best quarterback in the AFC East alone. Sure he’s had success at one of the most prestigious college football programs having played for Alabama, but this is the NFL. There isn’t a single person out there who cares what you did in high school and college if you can’t pull out W’s on game day. New England has done its part by bringing in Bill O’Brien in hopes of helping Mac Jones crack the top 10 QBs in the league, but it’s not going to happen with that big head on his shoulders. This know-it-all attitude isn’t going to work in today’s NFL. You have to listen and be a constant student of the game. Just because you played for Nick Saban doesn’t give you a free pass.

You might have learned a lot from Saban, but that’s not where it should stop. The NFL is constantly evolving and you have some of the best minds in football behind you. His ego needs to be in check or the New England Patriots will continue to be in the bottom of the division.
