Miami Dolphins: Is This Year’s NFL Draft Already A Bust?

Miami Dolphins GM Chris Grier

The Miami Dolphins decided to go all-in, trading away their first two picks in this year’s NFL Draft for Tyreek Hill. The Dolphins needed a playmaker and didn’t want to sit back and see Hill end up with their division rivals, the New York Jets. Ultimately they swooped in last minute and offered quite the haul for the star receiver. Unlike the past few NFL drafts, the team will have very limited picks in 2022 so with this year’s draft already a wash for the Miami Dolphins?

One of their biggest sticking points was not moving next year’s first-round picks to get a deal done with Kansas City. It seems the Dolphins feel like they went out and got every piece they needed to make sure Tua Tagovailoa had a better chance at succeeding this year. Despite the team sticking to their guns that he is in fact their franchise quarterback, they made it a point to not limit themselves next year.

Now there are rumors floating around that Miami might not stay put with their 3rd round pick and could trade back there as well. So you have to wonder, have the Miami Dolphins already given up on this year’s draft, or are they over-cocky with their recent slew of moves on offense? The team picked up a top WR in the offseason to be a complement to speedy receiver Jaylen Waddle. They signed Cedric Wilson and despite his limited success, could be a huge weapon as teams leave him 1-on-1 to compensate for Hill and Waddle. Miami was also able to keep Mike Gesicki in house hoping he finally finds his breakout season.

On the defensive side of the ball, the Dolphins were able to keep the majority of the unit together. Being as the team was one of the top defenses in the league last year only strengthens with another year to gel. Don’t expect the idea of a draft-day trade to go down with a surplus of talent on the defensive side of the ball. Miami is working on their offense and if the defense can keep the pace of the past few seasons, it’ll be one less thing for coaches to worry about.

Now the Miami Dolphins may have a few holes to fill that need to be addressed in this year’s draft, but they might not make those moves. If the team truly is stocking up for next year’s draft to make another run at success, they might trade back multiple times in 2022 to stockpile picks. The holes they have left on either side of the ball might come from diamond-in-the-rough deep draft boards, or the team could hold off filling these voids until teams start making roster cuts as they get down to 53-man rosters.

With that being said, the Miami Dolphins addressed plenty this offseason and have to feel like they’re sitting pretty. Some analysts have pointed to a lack of grade A level talent in this year’s draft depth and Miami could be hitting the skip button in 2022. The previous regime had the team winning football games and they only got better this offseason. Maybe the Miami Dolphins think they acquired everything they need to compete in 2022 and will fill holes in next year’s draft.
