DCU: Characters We’d Love To See Out Of The New DC

DC character Wally West

Now that The Flash is seemingly the end of the DCEU, starting with the Blue Beetle movie it’s all about the DCU moving forward. With yet another reboot of franchise favorites, it feels like it’s time to move past the big names. James Gunn and company has to what Gunn has done best and make get fans excited about new characters. That’s nothing new for the head of DC Studios with success in Marvel and DC. Between Guardians of the Galaxy and The Suicide Squad Gunn has taken lesser-known characters and made them fan favorites.

We all have seen the layout of the new DCU and what we’re getting out of the biggest names so far, so what fan favorites should be the focus? Whether they’re obscure characters or forgotten fan favorites, there are plenty of characters who could easily translate to the big screen.

Constantine:

There have been two iterations of John Constantine in recent memory. The Keanu Reeves version on the big screen was announced as a potential sequel and the Matt Ryan version never got a fair share on NBC. Reeves is a fan favorite and has reemerged as a superstar on screen for audiences. However, Matt Ryan absolutely nails the Constantine look, mannerisms, and character traits. Would we be put out if either got the role, no, but the balance in DCU’s new direction needs to be star power vs not swinging for the fences and miscasting.

Zatanna:

Justice League Dark has always had a place in the DC fandom. They might not be as big as the DC Big 3 but there’s a chance to get creative with characters fans know and can get excited for. With the right casting of a young fresh face in this role, fans can invest in a character who can be a staple in multiple movies for years to come. Any of the JLD characters would allow a change in tone and teeter between genres outside of just a stereotypical superhero movie.

More DC: The Flash Won’t Get The Respect It Deserves

Nightwing:

How in the hell have we not got a live-action Nightwing movie? Every single Bat-family member should have made an appearance at some point in the cycle of Batmen over the years. We’ve barely got Robin and fans love Nightwing. If the new DCU doesn’t have movies that take the focus away from Bruce Wayne and give us a fresh take on Gotham, we’re wasting our time with Batman going forward. There are only so many times we can watch an origin or close to an origin again … and again … and again. Joker proved that the main characters in Gotham can stand on their own. It’s time to get past the typical Batman.

Wally West

The Flash is another universe that fans love. Wally West could easily be featured in a Flash-focused. You don’t need to cut out Barry for Wally to succeed. Can’t we pass the torch to a character fans haven’t seen simultaneously on the big and small screen? Isn’t it time to bring a breath of fresh air to a new generation of fans? Everyone loves Barry, Bruce, and Clark, but they’ve been done to death. That’s where superhero fatigue sets in because it feels like we’ve seen it 100 times already

There are so many characters in the DCU that could have their own shared universe. Fans care about Wally West as much as Barry Allen. If we’re getting Damian Wayne, why not balance it out with Super Sons? If we’re sticking with a younger DCU, why not Cassandra Cain/Orphan/Batgirl? It all doesn’t have to be about the biggest properties from DC Comics as long as we get the stories we can fall in love with. They can pay tribute to the main characters as well as have movies featuring them, but the story doesn’t need to revolve around them.
