America’s Top 5 Dark Rides Outside Disney/Universal

Battle For Metropolis

What are the best non- Disney/Universal dark rides in America? There is a great selection to choose from. Choosing five is a great undertaking, but some standouts are featured at your local amusement parks. Which dark rides made the cut?

5. Justice League Battle for Metropolis, Six Flags-

There are numerous versions of this attraction at various Six Flags parks. What makes these so intriguing is their ability to mimic Disney/Universal themeing on a Six Flags budget. This is an interactive shooting ride, themed to the DC Universe. There are numerous animatronics and set pieces, and while some versions at various parks have a better layout/themeing, most of these rides are the same. Still, one of the more underrated rides because of the Six Flags name attached to them.

4. Cave Train, Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk-

A classic attraction on the Beach Boardwalk, this might not be the most elegantly themed dark ride, however, it has a lot of charm. The ride features some of the original cast of characters of the Beach Boardwalk. The outside themeing is superb. Most of the attraction takes place under a road as well, so you do feel like you’re in a cave.

3. Wonder Mountain’s Guardian, Canada’s Wonderland-

Part coaster, part dark ride, this innovative attraction is an interactive shooter. You’ll be amazed at the amount of themeing. The train cars are excellently designed. While the ride does use screens, this is still a fun attraction that doesn’t fit the narrative of the Cedar Fair. And be prepared for a surprising ending.

2. Hershey’s Chocolate Tour, Hershey’s Chocolate World-

One of the most catchy dark rides in all the world. You’ll be amazed at how detailed this attraction is. Going through the process of making a candy bar, this isn’t your typical dark ride. It can be somewhat informative. There are small pods, and arguably one of the most catchy songs you’ll ever hear.

1. Calico Mine Ride, Knotts Berry Farm

The top dark ride outside of Disney/Universal is less than 10 minutes from Disneyland. The Calico Mine Ride is such a classic and iconic attraction. You’ll be transported into a mine. The animatronics, while not as advanced as some newer Disney models, look amazing. The themeing looks top-notch, along with some excellent effects. Simply put, this is one of the best dark rides in America regardless of the park.

There are surely many other classic dark rides in America that are just as good as anything Disney or Universal can create. These 5 are just some of the best. Lists will of course differ, however, there’s no doubt these attractions stand out in a crowded market.
